Jake Calypso is known primarily as a rockabilly singer. Growing up in the north of France, listening to Elvis, Charlie Feathers, Little Richard, he had his first contact with the BLUES in 1979 with a Chuck Berry song : ‘Everyday I Have The Blues’. Later on John Lee Hooker became his essential Blues singer.
Although Jake has already been playing 6 strings over 12 bars and been blowing that piece of wood surrounded by metal - known as harmonica - with his band ’Wild Boogie Combo’ in 2012, it was a trip to Mississippi in 2014 that gave him big influence and put a new direction to his upcoming projects and records.
For Jake - already popular as a chameleon in between Rockin’ Blues and
Rockabilly or as a preacher when closing his concerts with the hypnotic and
captivating rhythms of Gospel - the Blues started to take up more room in his musical passion:
In 2016 he did a Blues album called 'Vance Mississippi' with Archie Lee Hooker (the nephew of the King of Boogie). He began to gig around a few bars and ‘juke joints’ as solo artist ‘Lonely Jake’. And in 2022 Jake went to the legendary Sun Studio. With musicians from Memphis, under the name of ‘Memphis Blues Cream’, he recorded a tribute album to all the Rhythm & Blues artists before the era of Rock'n'Roll.
With 2 of his ‘Red Hot’ musicians - Ben D. Driver and Thierry Sellier - Jake decides in 2023 to create the ‘JAKE CALYPSO TRIO’. They made this first 4 track EP as an anticipation of an album to be recorded in Studio Sun in Memphis in April 2024.
'OH YEAH' is a Blues Bopper in the tradition of Slim Harpo and Dr. Ross written in memory of Didier Baigneaux, a great fan of this pre-Rock'n'Roll music.
'HEART ATTACK BLUES' & 'SLAMMIN' DOOR BLUES' are real-life stories swung to the Shuffle with the sound of the incisive Kay guitar as in
Memphis in 1953. ‘PLEASE COMEBACK ANOTHER DAY’ draws its
inspiration from other songs like 'Big Boss Man' or 'Hi-Heel Sneekers'.
All songs recorded and mixed at the SHACK SOUND STUDIO with the participation of Calypso Darras, Jake's granddaughter.
